The Reception Theory
The Reception Theory is the idea of media being encoded and decoded from the developer to the consumer (you). Different people will decode the information in their own way. This theory suggests that the audience is active and the audience might react in different ways and could be unpredictable. This theory points out that the media text is created by the audience which means everybody will play a game their own way meaning they create a different experience compared to another person. There are three readings that the audience can arrive to;
Preferred Reading,
The audience understands and accepts the ideas offered.
Negotiated Reading,
The audience understands the ideas offered but only accepts some aspects and reject the rest.
Opositional Reading,
The audience receives the ideas the opposite way of which they were intended.
